The total world area under oat is approximately 26.8 million hectares. The most important cultivated oat species is Avena Sativa, which has been estimated to cover almost 80% of the total world acreage. The rest of the area is cultivated mostly with the Abyzantina and only a small area is under other species.

Variety
|
| |
In India little work had been done in the past towards the development of high yielding varieties of oats for grain, fodder or dual purpose (grain-cum-fodder). Selection of varieties depends mainly on the following factors:
- Method Of Sowing
- Crop Rotation
- Pest and Disease
- Irrigration Facilities
- Climatic Conditions
